NEW HAVEN — A startup launched by a couple of Yale grads is quietly making a name for itself in the fast-growing business of premium organic work clothing made in the USA.

“You had Patagonia for the weekend but nothing if you needed a suit to wear to work,” said Amanda Rinderle, who along with her husband Jonas Clark began Tuckerman & Co. from a start-up incubator at Yale last year.

“Everything’s fast fashion, so it’s not made to last. We looked into it and realized that there was a huge environmental problem, particularly for cotton. It’s one of the most chemically-intensive crops in the world,” said Rinderle.

Rinderle, 30, and Clark, 34, are tapping into a growing consumer class driven to make purchases that are in line with both fashion and personal values. The couple – who met in Cambridge, Mass., before moving to Connecticut to attend Yale – began their entrepreneurial venture because they were frustrated at not being able to find ethically sourced, high-quality work clothing that was made to last.

According to the World Wildlife Fund, cotton covers just 2.4 percent of the world’s crop land but accounts for 24 percent of the global sales of insecticide and 11 percent of pesticides sales.

“We’re outdoorsy people and have been big fans of Patagonia and their approach to their supply chain,” said Clark. “They switched to organic cotton long before it became cool. We thought – ‘gosh, where’s a Patagonia for the office?’ That kind of got us off and running.”

As luck would have it, Patagonia’s Chief Storyteller Vincent Stanley was giving a talk at the Yale School of Management where Rinderle and Clark, then students, cornered him with the pitch for Tuckerman & Co., named after their favorite hiking trail in New Hampshire.

Stanley not only liked the idea, he got onboard as an advisor. “I was encouraged by the impeccable quality of the final product,” he said.

The men’s dress shirts – single line stitching, raised hems, buttons from tree nuts in Panama, interfacing stitched in to avoid chemicals – are made from organic cotton grown in Israel and woven in Italy by suppliers who hold the Global Organic Textiles Standard (GOTS) certification. The material is cut and sewn at a factory in Fall River, Mass., where workers are second and third generation unionized shirt-makers with healthcare coverage, earning an average hourly pay of $12. The company has no employees besides Rinderle and Clark.

Launched in New Haven from a start-up incubator at Yale last year, Tuckerman has raised close to $100,000 in grants, including $30,267 from 255 donors on Kickstarter in 2014, when the duo was in their second year. Clark said the online start-up quickly became profitable but he declined to divulge revenue. The company is test-marketing a line of women’s shirts.

“Most people who are paying $100 for a shirt at a retailer – that shirt cost $25 to make,” said Clark. “Because we are direct to consumer, we cut out some of those mark-ups along the way.”‘

Tuckerman’s dress shirt is priced at $145. Brooks Brothers non-organic cotton Herringbone French Cuff dress shirt, for example, woven in Italy, is priced at $325.

“The concern about the environment is spreading. However, when the price is high, such concerns matter less,” said Narasimhan Srinivasan, professor of marketing at the University of Connecticut. “But obviously Tuckerman is catering to an upscale market. It’s economically viable.”

For artisanal clothing makers, a small group of loyal customers is all it takes to sustain sales. “The market segment for longer lasting versus cheap throw-away clothes is growing,” said Anne MacDonald, former chief marketing officer at Macy’s and an advisor to Tuckerman. “The shopper who buys only on discount and in price promotion department stores such as Macy’s and H&M is not the primary customer Tuckerman is targeting.”

Tuckerman sees its core customers as consumers willing to spend on brands that value people and the planet. These consumers choose to support retailers who help build sustainable supplier communities abroad and the buy local movement at home. Nearly 20 percent of Tuckerman’s sales are accrued in Connecticut as buyers spend dollars in support of local craftspeople and retailers.

Demand for Made in USA wedding gowns is driving sales at Modern Trousseau in Woodbridge, which sells across the U.S. and also in the U.K. and Japan at an average wholesale price of around $1,800 per gown. In Ridgefield, Fox-Rich Textiles Inc., a fabric converter, supplies material for hunting and theatrical accessories.

At the Hartford Denim Company LLC, launched in 2010, Dave Marcoux, 32, co-founder, said sales continues to grow locally. Priced at $235 each, the jeans are made in Hartford on antique sewing machines and a Connecticut logo goes on every pair sold in the U.S., Sweden and Japan. The thread is sourced from New Bedford, Mass., and the denim from North Carolina. “We want to support the domestic economy as well as avoid child labor,” said Marcoux.

Tuckerman & Co. Hoagy Check

The demand for small online stores selling handcrafted work including clothing has spurred the phenomenal success of marketplaces like Etsy, which has 24 million active buyers and gross merchandise sales of $2.39 billion in 2015.

“Young entrepreneurs are bringing back a fashion-forward spirit in America,” said Jacob Harrison Long, CEO of the American Woolen Company, which manufacturers fabric for J. Crew and Jos. A Banks in Stafford Springs. In the last 18 months, his firm has aligned with 22 garment start-ups. “We’re tapping into a new Made in America phenomenon brought on by online apparel start-ups. Five years ago they were making nothing. Now they’re doing upward of $20 million in revenue.”

Much of that growth rests on support from a small but fierce band of loyalists who buy well, buy less, and derive satisfaction from an aesthetic wardrobe that’s gentle on the planet.

Tuckerman & Co. does not advertise online and relies on word-of-mouth and repeat customers. Reorder rates are more than 60 percent and the startup ranks high on Internet searches for men’s dress shirts alongside small artisanal companies such as Rawganique and Solne in the U.S. and Culturata in Canada. Clark views Brooks Brothers as the closest competitor, despite the disparity in pricing

“The purpose of Tuckerman is to make great clothing but to do it in a way that does right by those involved,” said Rinderle. “For us, that means working with partners who use fair labor practices and safe working conditions. It’s a real point of pride for us to make our shirts here.”

Editor’s Comment
It is great to see another maker of dress shirts made in the USA. Check out their website: Tuckerman & Co. And don’t forget they are organic. Tuckerman and Co. was a Kickstarter project like another dress shirt maker Hucklebury.

Kickstarter – Secure Pocket 2-in-1 Athletic Shorts by Edge Athletic Apparel

Kickstarter, a crowd-sourcing instrument to fund new projects, has introduced a novel idea – men’s and women’s athletic shorts that secure your pocket’s contents. Plus, they will be Made in the USA. The deadline is December 29, 2016. The goal is $20,000. The project is by Edge Athletic Apparel. Pledge your support today.

Introducing The Secure Pocket 2-in-1 Athletic Shorts

About this project

Introducing Edge Athletic Apparel’s Secure Pocket design, 2-in-1 athletic short!

Fixing a Major Problem

THE PROBLEM: Stuff! We all are guilty of carrying stuff with us, whomever we are, where ever we go. From the professional athlete, to the average, once a week gym goer, we carry our stuff on our body at all times-during our workout, on our run, training, yoga, or simply going about our day! We have our phones, keys and wallets/credit cards on us at a minimum, constantly being made aware of them and being distracted from our activities. We’ve tried clever ways of keeping these items secure while we go about our day; putting them in socks, in clumsy armbands, those bulky waistbands or fanny packs, or even holding them in our hands! You name it, we’ve tried it.  Undoubtedly, many of us have also tried athletic shorts that claim to hold our items in place, yet they still allow for our stuff to move around, fall out, make annoying clanking noises, are hard to access or are too small to fit anything and are still a distraction!

THE SOLUTION: Secure Pocket 2-in-1 athletic shorts! Here at Edge, we have designed a 2-in-1 athletic short with a large, easily accessible pocket that securely holsters all your stuff to your body. The pocket design is different from other athletic shorts on the market in that the pocket is beneath the compression layer and truly holds your belongings in place. The compression acts as a holster and secures everything from your phone, keys, wallet/credit cards, and more to your body. This security allows you to keep focused on your activities and no longer on the distraction of the clanking, bouncing, bulkiness or falling out of the stuff in your pockets! As the creators of the Secure Pocket design, and athletes ourselves, it was our goal to create something stylish and comfortable, with function and performance like no other shorts out there!  We feel we have done this with our innovative Secure Pocket shorts. No more fooling around with your phone placement, listening to the clanking of keys, being made aware of the bulkiness of all the items in your pocket. We feel these shorts will quickly become your favorite athletic shorts as you will be confident and comfortable and almost forget you have anything in your pockets at all, thus allowing you to take your day, your actives, your lifestyle- “to the Edge”!

  •  Although, at the moment, our pictures feature only men’s shorts, we are producing BOTH men and women’s Secure Pocket Athletic Shorts for this campaign.
  • Men will have the option of the  traditional athletic short as shown in our video, or a version that is 2 inches longer.

$20,000 Campaign Goal

We have set our campaign goal at $20,000. This $20,000 (or more) will help us accomplish our goal of introducing our pocket design to the world and getting our shorts in the hands of you, the consumer. It will also help get our apparel line, Edge Athletic Apparel, on the map. Once we get funded, we will work diligently in fulfilling our orders, working hard to get our quality products to you on time or sooner!

Edge Athletic Apparel’s Future Goals

Our our long term goal is to create a functional athletic apparel line, with stylish, comfortable, innovative and performance enhancing athletic wear for men and women!  We’d also like to see our pocket design in a variety of bottoms with pockets, such as causal wear, golf, business attire and more.

Risks and challenges

Since the inception of our product in December of 2013, and our desire to bring it to life, we have encountered many hurdles, as new companies do. Likewise, we are sure there will be more hurdles along the way. Our company has a strong team, an even stronger supporting cast and is highly motivated to deliver quality product that exceeds your expectations.

We’ve spent many hours choosing the best materials, re-working designs and searching for a quality, local manufacture. Our promise to you, the backers, is that we will be 100% transparent during this campaign, when it comes to unforeseen setbacks and obstacles that may arise in production, shipping or anything else it takes to get our product to you.

The Lifetime Wool Coat. by Crafted Wool Co. — Kickstarter

www.kickstarter.com/projects/954278272/the-lifetime-wool-coat

Kickstarter – The Lifetime Wool Coat

There is a great new Kickstarter (a crowd-funding) project. The project is from a company called The Crafted Wool Company. They would like to make scarfs and coats made of wool. The premium wool will be from the United States, and manufactured and assembled in Los Angeles. The wool garments remind me of Pendleton when they used to make all their garments here – but at about half the price. This is a special introductory offer, the coats will be $99 and the scarfs $29. And, in an homage to the quality garments of yesteryear, they come with a lifetime guarantee. To pledge – click the Kickstarter link at the top to get to the site.

About this project

The Crafted story began several months ago after shopping for a quality, domestic made wool coat. Well, we were shocked to see brand name wool plaid garments selling for up to several hundred dollars. Not only that, these premium coats were often still made overseas with less than premium materials.

Inspired by those old wool plaid hunter coats of early 20th century (many of which are still being worn today after decades of use), we set out to build the The Lifetime Wool Coat with lifelong durability and true sustainability in mind. Not only did we accomplish this, we also ended up creating what we feel is the World’s Best Wool Coat, capable of 4 season multipurpose use and true year round comfort.

Inspired by old-school American build quality, but caught in a world of fast-fashion and disposable clothes, Crafted Wool Co. set out to build The Lifetime Wool Coat coat to be used and loved for many years to come out of proven materials. Three stunning colors to choose from with a fitted modern cut. Launching exclusively on Kickstarter.

When it came time to source the fabric, we decided to go for the timeless Checkered Plaid American made wool blend, with three awesome color choices that will forever be in style. Checkered Plaid is one of the most beloved patterns in clothing history. Whether you’re a Rockstar, Lumberjack, or Technology CEO, you can appreciate the timeless design and awesome color schemes. Plaid feels as comfortable in an LA fashion show as it does in the rugged mountains. The fabric is rugged on the outside, with a cozy light fleece on the inside, thanks to a small amount of nylon woven directly into the wool. This blend also helps the coat to maintain its shape over time and increases its durability. We’ve done away with any synthetic liners to “plump” up the coat to make it appear thicker, like many manufacturers do. The 18 oz wool blend is already the perfect thickness to keep you comfortable.

It all starts with the premium durable materials and a rugged build philosophy:

1) 18 oz USA Made Premium 85% Wool Blend

2) Leather and Tent Grade Polyester Threading

3) Double Row Stitching In High Stress Areas

4) Tagua Nut / Vegetable Ivory Buttons (read below)

5) 100% Cotton Collar Liner

Then finally, each shirt is carefully inspected and Individually Serial Numbered.

We tested several buttons for our shirts, and the ones we finally picked out are very special. Our buttons are made from Vegetable Ivory. Vegetable Ivory is a superior, premium natural material that is sustainably collected from the Tagua Palm in Central America. Each palm produces several pounds of Tagua nuts annually, from which countless buttons can be made. They are hard, very hard. In fact they score a 3 on the mineral scale, meaning they are harder than traditional copper buttons, as well as select other metals. Each Crafted Coat has 16 of these amazing buttons.

So why are they called Vegetable Ivory? When the Tagua Nuts are processed, they can produce beautiful, textured decorative pieces that resemble Elephant Ivory so closely, they were given that name. Its a phenomenal material that we can’t wait to help promote, and we feel will it has the potential to directly help reduce the poaching of these majestic animals.

Although we were inspired by the classic early 20th century wool coats in terms of build quality, the sizing was designed by us to be purely modern. We wanted to go for a fitted look. Think of it somewhere between a long sleeve dress shirt and an outdoor jacket. Our criteria was to look great with just an undershirt on, or layered over a sweatshirt or long sleeved shirt. We had several individuals, both male and female of varying heights wear them and honestly they looked great regardless of the size. If you want a fitted look, we suggest using the size guide below. If you want a looser, more traditional baggy fit, we suggest sizing up one.

Wool is one of the most resilient materials available and also one of most historically significant, with many archaeologically discovered garments dating back to antiquity. In fact, the oldest preserved wool top is 1,700 years old. Humans have relied on and have been perfecting wool for clothing since nearly the beginning of recorded time.

Wool is an incredible, sophisticated fiber which has been loved by humans for centuries. These above properties are even more important today in a world full of waste and environmental strain. One of the features we love about our coats is their ability to be worn for extended periods of time without washing. The individual wool fiber has a natural, antimicrobial coating which provides odor protection and eliminates the need for constant washing. We recommend a wash every six months. This makes these coats perfect for travel and backpacking trips!

These particular coats were inspired by the wool hunting jackets first introduced in the 1800’s and made popular again throughout the 1940’s and 1950’s. A true testament to wool, there are still 60+ year wool plaid jackets still in use and being worn today. Crafted Wool Co. has even further ruggedized and then modernized a classic with an emphasis on sustainability, while keeping that endearing style alive.

We have awesome scarves too! They are made from the same iconic material as our coats and look awesome when mixing and matching colors. They are a generous 10” x 55 1/2” and can be worn in various styles, with a soft fleece finish on one side and the durable finish on the other. We are giving out 300 of these free to our early bird backers. They will retail for $29.

Crafted Wool’s mission statement is to is to promote sustainability through high quality wool clothing. We use domestic manufacturing in Los Angeles and are using USA made wool. Our natural buttons are made in Central America, and our thread is top quality. Our raw materials are…very expensive! We could probably price these coats at twice or three times what we’re selling them for, and if all we cared about was profits, we would do just that. High quality, name-brand wool shirts / coats can easily get into the hundreds of dollars. However, one of our main goals is to keep our products as affordable as possible and keep them that way! At only $99.00 on Kickstarter it really is blowout promotional pricing, we hope you guys feel you’re getting your moneys worth.

We are setting out to become the premier wool brand by offering phenomenal quality at ridiculously cheap prices. We feel our business model is sustainable for achieving this. Although we’re a startup, we will stand by even our earliest products. Your Lifetime Wool Coat will be covered under warranty from normal wear and tear for as long as we’re in business. We’d love to work with you make any repair work necessary to keep your Lifetime Coat around for as long as possible. Even if we have to close our doors earlier than expected, we’re committed to offering a grace period for customers to get their coats repaired. Its the absolute best and realistic warranty any clothing startup can give!

Risks and challenges

These coats are ready for manufacturing. As evident in the campaign, samples have already been made. All the materials, labels and hang tags have also been sampled and are ready for mass production. Our goal is to get the jackets to our backers on-time for the estimated delivery. Being a startup committed to growing into a true brand, we cannot accept returns. We are however, offering a great warranty.

Kangol 504: Bring Jobs To America With Bollman Hat Company by Bollman Hat Company — Kickstarter

To see the official Kickstarter project clink this link: Kickstarter.com/bollman hats

I wish I had seen this Kickstarter Project earlier. Kickstarter is trying to raise money for Bollman – America’s oldest hat company to bring a hat making machine from Australia to create more hats. The goal is 100,000, the amount raised thus far is $86,000. The deadline is January 17, 2016 at 6 pm. Update January 18, 2016 – Bollman has reached its goal. Congratulations.

You know Kangol, we make the hats with the kangaroo logo on them.  Kangol is the world’s most famous headwear brand and it’s been worn by some of the world’s most famous celebrities like Brad Pitt, Bill Murray, Eminem, Samuel L. Jackson, Gwen Stefani, Kid Rock, Madonna, Miley Cyrus, and others.

Kangol is a brand that was born in Britain and grew up on the streets of New York and now we’d like your help to bring another icon to the states and move as much as possible of the Kangol 504’s manufacturing stateside with the Bollman Hat Company.

We’re looking for your help us bring the historic machinery that has been used to make the Kangol 504 and other styles since the start of Kangol to the states and create new American jobs.

Bollman Hat Company is America's oldest hat maker.
Bollman Hat Company is America’s oldest hat maker.

The Bollman Hat Company is the oldest hat maker in America dating back to 1868. We are employee-owned and pay our employee-owners a living wage. In 2001, Bollman Hat Company acquired the global license to design, produce, and distribute Kangol headwear. By the time Bollman Hat Company had acquired the license, the decision had already been made by the previous ownership to move all the manufacturing to a factory in China which was created in the mid-1990s to stay competitive. The factory in China was purchased in 2006 by a Chinese hat maker who has now decided to exit due to rising labor costs in Southern China. Since acquiring the Kangol license, Bollman Hat Company made several Kangol straw, wool felt, and fur felt styles in their factory in Pennsylvania, but until now, did not make knitted and blocked hats which are the most iconic Kangol styles.

The 1932 staff of Bollman Hat Company.
The 1932 staff of Bollman Hat Company.

The Wool 504 is the iconic, original Kangol® Cap. First introduced in 1954, the 504 cap gets its name from the block number that it is made on. The 100% seamless wool cap is the ultimate cap for comfort and style and now for the first time ever Made In The USA.

Why Do We Need These Machines?

Over the years there has been attempts to duplicate the machines unsuccessfully.  As our Design Director, Nic Harris, likes to point out this is very similar to the denim selvage machines that jean manufacturers replaced in the 80’s.  The result was less of a quality product than what was produced with the older, slower machines.  We’re not interested in faster machines that make an inferior product.  We want to keep the quality that has built Kangol and that our customers love.

The manufacturing of the 504 requires special machinery which was built specifically for Kangol in the 1930’s and 40’s to create the knit of the 504. These are the same machines we are looking for your help to move today. These special machines were each customized to knit, link, tease, shear, and block the Kangol 504 style. Other styles will follow with sufficient funding.

One of the ten machines already brought to the US.
One of the ten machines already brought to the US.

We have already moved 10 of the machines over to the U.S. and made the necessary electrical conversions for the equipment to work in the U.S., but there are another 70 machines yet to move. Altogether, the cost to move it will be over $650,000. Bollman Hat Company has invested more than $350,000 and in addition we’ve already secured $60,000 from the Department of Community & Economic Development’s Pennsylvania First Program grant, $82,000 in Job Creation Tax Credits, and $18,450 in Workforce and Economic Development Network of Pennsylvania helping to fund the skills training needed for our employee owners. The cost of making the Kangol product in the U.S. is estimated to be more than twice the cost of making it in China, but we eliminate the transportation costs to North America, achieve faster customer turnaround, and control our innovation.

Why Do We Want To Bring These Machines To America?

America became a world leader because of its manufacturing strength and the middle class built by this strength. Over the past 50 years America has lost its title of the world manufacturing leader with many of the jobs going overseas to China, India, and Bangladesh. That doesn’t mean that great products can’t or shouldn’t be made here and Bollman Hat Company is a testament to that. Aside from being America’s oldest hat maker and nearly 150 years old, Bollman Hat Company is also the founding member of American Made Matters, a community of US Makers with a focus on bringing attention to the importance of making and buying American products. Bollman Hat Company and American Made Matters believe that if it can be made here, it should be made here! The beloved Kangol 504 is the next piece in that puzzle.

Bringing the 504 and other Kangol styles’ production to America will create dozens of new jobs for American workers while maintaining the current workforce and that can make a big impact.

A Rewarding Campaign

We’ve worked hard to come up with some great rewards for backers so not only do you get to feel good about where your money is going but you’ll be able to show off your support too.  We’ve also created bundles so you can get almost any combination of rewards you’d like.

Some of our rewards include:

We’d like your help in strengthening America again and bringing jobs back to the U.S. Your help will be greatly appreciated and reinforce the tide of change to bring back Made In The U.S.A.

Special thanks go to our friends Samuel L. Jackson, West Field Films and Killer Interactive for their help with this campaign.

And to you, our backers and supporters!  Thank you again!

Risks and challenges

There is very little risk in not being able to complete our project. We have already brought 10 of the machines to the US and more will be on the way shortly. To purchase all the machines and create the most jobs possible, we are looking to Kickstarter for help. If our campaign is tremendously successful, we may need additional time to complete and deliver all rewards beyond our estimated delivery dates.

The Quarter Century Jacket | A 25 Year Guarantee — Kickstarter

The Quarter Century Jacket – Kickstarter

With a nod to old fashioned American apparel manufacturing (and Filson too), this new Kickstarter project (a crowdsourcing funding project) plans to make jackets made in the USA, made to last 25 years and made out of duck canvas. Click on the above link to see their video and don’t forget to pledge your support. The have already surpassed their goal but you can still order yourself a jacket if you pledge before November 14, 2015.

About this project

This jacket is …

1) Made from premium fabric. We use the highest quality 12oz duck canvas. It’s designed to have an amazing soft feel but withstand the toughest wear.

2) Backed by a 25 year guarantee. We’re so confident that your Quarter Century Jacket will be the most durable jacket you’ve ever had that we are backing them up with a 25 year guarantee.

3) Made in America. The best quality comes when you make things in your own backyard. We work with production facilities that pay proper attention to fabric, people and processes right here in America.

4) Sold wholesale. By offering our jackets directly via Kickstarter we are able to cut out the retail channel and offer you a jacket that would usually retail for $300 at only $159.

Our journey started almost two years ago when we took a radically new approach to making clothes. It’s the passion for quality clothes that led us on a mission to design The Quarter Century Pants. Now, we are at it again and are doing something similarly radical for outerwear: a jacket so well made it’s guaranteed to last 25 years.

How does the jacket last so long?

The Quarter Century Jacket is made from premium US made 12oz duck canvas. Duck canvas differs from plain canvas in that the threads in the former are stronger and more tightly woven. The jacket is then constructed right here in America and finished with military grade hardware. The result: the best fitting, most durable jacket on the planet.

Inspired by the classic 20th century deck jacket, we set out to design a timeless and stylish everyday jacket. The Quarter Century jacket redefines style by presenting itself in a simple and modern construction:

Our Quarter Century Jacket includes the following features:

  • Sophisticated design (modern classic)
  • Heavy duty duck canvas fabric (12oz)
  • Double reinforced elbow patch
  • Utility hook
  • Military grade copper buttons
  • Double tacked on all stress points
  • Integrated headphone jack
  • Insulated arm opening
  • Two large inner chest pockets
  • Security pocket (fits iPad mini)

We are launching our Quarter Century Jacket in five colors: stone, amber, olive, slate and black. Let us know if you are looking for additional colors. We’d love to hear from you!

Every jacket comes in size S-XXL for both men & women in our signature Quarter Century fabric and fit. We will confirm your preferences at the completion of the Kickstarter. You can review our fit guide here.

We are offering The Quarter Century Jacket at wholesale. No retail markups. No distribution markups. By selling to you directly we can maintain the highest quality and construction while offering a fair price point.

For our early supporters, we are offering a Kickstarter wholesale price at $159 including the Quarter Century Jacket and free shipping (US). Shipping to Canada is $12 and to the rest of the world $20 for a single jacket. Click on the reward to see all details.

The Quarter Century Jacket is 100% made in America. We use the highest quality fabrics and very best construction.

Our premium duck canvas is made by Mount Vernon Mills in South Carolina and the quilted inner lining, metal hardware and construction is done right here in Los Angeles, CA.

We’ve made these jackets to last a lifetime and are guaranteeing they are of the highest quality possible, but if anything happens to them we’ll repair them free of charge. Send them back to us and we’ll fix them!

Risks and challenges

Producing anything at high-volume poses a number of problems. With that said we’re not starting from square one. In March of 2015, we went on Kickstarter and raised over $250,000 for our Quarter Century Pants. We believe in transparency and communication, so our backers will be the first to know about any unplanned hurdles or delays.

The True Cost | A Fashion Documentary Movie

The True Cost | A Fashion Documentary Movie.

I have just reviewed Andrew Morgan’s Documentary “The True Cost.” It is an extremely professional and entertaining film about a rather complex and sometimes gloomy subject which is the impact of Fast Fashion. Fast Fashion is the term used for the recent phenomenon where clothes have become so cheap (due to them being outsourced to countries like China, Bangladesh and India) that they have become disposable. Mr. Morgan starts the film with Fashion models on runways and intersperses commercials from H& M, Zara and others to make the connection between fashion and all of the problems they have created ( many that we didn’t even realize). Some of the issues brought up by the film are: “global poverty, inequality  and environmental destruction” according to Producer Micheal Ross.

The premiere of The True Cost in Cannes: Colin Firth, Livia Firth Andrew Moran and Paul Ross

The premiere of The True Cost in Cannes: Colin Firth, Livia Firth, Andrew Moran and Michael Ross

This independent film which was originally funded through Kickstarter (a crowd-sourcing funding source – by the way I was an Associate Producer for the film and got film credit) opened up this past week in Los Angeles, Cannes, France, New York, Tokyo and London. Many celebrities and Fashion icons had attended these premieres including Stella McCarthy, Colin Firth and Tom Ford. It opens tonight May 31, 2015 in San Francisco.

The Journey

Andrew Morgan and Michael Ross went to thirteen different countries to film this ambitious project which took over two years to complete. Interwoven throughout the movie is a 23 year old Bangladeshi worker who has a 6 year old daughter and covers some of her difficulties. The reason for following a Bangladeshi worker is that Mr. Morgan was originally inspired by the Rana Plaza Building collapse that killed 1138 Bangladeshi garment workers – most of them women.

The problems from Fast Fashion: starting from the beginning, delves into the subject of cotton. But, in going very deeply into cotton, possibly Mr. Morgan was sweeping his brush a bit too widely – I mean it wasn’t wrong but it does make it difficult to cover more deeply other subjects. By bringing in organic cotton, it does bring in the subject of pesticides which cause cancer, birth defects and environmental pollution. I do admire Mr. Morgan going after Monsanto which has monopolized the farming industry in every way and have made the independent farmers poor and dependent on Monsanto itself- but some may criticize that Monsanto is not a direct linear problem due to Fast Fashion. True, Monsanto is a concurrent problem along with Fast Fashion, as is, the current state of American capitalism where profits mean everything to the exclusion of everything else. The profits over everything philosophy is defended in the documentary by Free Market advocates and Big Business Top executives – they never flinch that this might be wrong – which has always been the case with hard-core capitalists. But, it is the main point of the documentary that will still need to be debated. Is it wrong for Wal-Mart to bargain to make the Bangladesh factories make shirts for $5, and then next month see if they can make them for $4? Whose fault is it? Wal-Mart or the desperate factory owner willing to cut corners? Is it the Mega company that hires these companies and has them sign agreements that promises that they will not mistreat employees and then knowingly let these companies break these agreements or is it the companies that cut the corners in order to get the job in the race to the bottom? One obvious solution is that when the Mega companies hire “these contract Factories” that these factories automatically become employees of that Mega Company. Easy solution, however, big business will never submit to this – unless legally forced to.

Another topic brought up regarding Fast Fashion is the problems with just the sheer volume of clothing being produced – the abundant use of resources, the disposal of clothing into numerous landfills, the unintended economic consequence of used clothing dumped into Haiti and the ecological disasters it has caused.

The documentary touches on many issues, however, Mr. Morgan does not give solutions. But, it wasn’t his intent.  It is hoped that this film will start some discussions on these subjects like: do we need consumerism and materialism to be happy? Isn’t it insane for us to be buying stuff we don’t need?

I highly recommend this film. See it in the theatres or you can buy it online at truecostmovie.

Lumina Clothing Sale Items | Lumina Clothing – American Made Menswear

Lumina Clothing Sale Items | Lumina Clothing – American Made Menswear.

The Lumina Clothing Company is a classic modern American story. In the “About Us” section, Lumina started making neckware in the midst of the Great Recession. The company, then, became a maker of ties made in the USA. In 2012, Lumina wanted to become a full wardrobe maker of men’s clothing and went to Kickstarter – a crowd funding organization – to fund their ambition. And through Kickstarter, Lumina got their financial backing to make trousers and shirts as well as open a store in Raleigh, North Carolina. The clothes are quite reasonably priced (unless you are one of those people who only buy their clothing when it is on clearance).

The OLIVERS Brief: Think outside the boxer by OLIVERS — Kickstarter

The OLIVERS Brief: Think outside the boxer by OLIVERS — Kickstarter.

Olivers is an American clothing company that got its start a couple of years ago through Kickstarter (a crowdsourcing company) to make some of the finest U.S. made athletic shorts. Now they are expanding by making mens’ briefs. They already have met their goal to make these type of briefs, but you still have 14 days to put in your order. To pledge, click the link at the top and it will take you to the official Olivers Kickstarter page.

About this project

The cotton boxer brief is a relic, badly in need of an update. There’s good news, however – we spent the past year building the perfect replacement.

For starters, we’ve kicked cotton to the curb.

While it’s known in the apparel industry that cotton is a terrible performance fabric, it remains the default for the boxer brief. Here’s why that’s a big problem.

We searched until we found the best performance fabrics on the planet. We then spent months developing, designing, and iterating on our prototypes — no small task, but it paid off.

The process led us to Switzerland, and a special company, Schoeller. Driven by innovation and functionality, Schoeller has built a reputation among experts as the premier technical mill in the world.

With a shared commonality of intent, we were ecstatic to begin working with them.

This fabric was first developed for the military. It has a soft, plush hand feel for maximum comfort.

David founded OLIVERS in 2013. The team has grown to include Dylan, Skye, Gabe, Steve, Justin, and Michael. Together, we’ve worked for and with some of the leading technical apparel brands in the market, including: Rapha, Arc’Teryx, Specialized Bicycles, and Mission Workshop.

We’re lucky to count two of the country’s premier manufacturers as partners. Located in San Francisco, they bring more than 40 years experience working with pre-eminent brands like Nike and Under Armour. Keeping this part of the process close helps us to iterate and arrive at the best solutions – all while keeping a careful eye on quality.

Together, we’re committed to bringing you the finest men’s athletic apparel available.

There’s two main benefits to launching this campaign on Kickstarter.

1. First off, we want to make sure you’re excited about this product! This allows us the opportunity to find that out before production.

2. The top fabric mills and component suppliers have high MOQ’s (minimum order quantities) and long lead times. Any working capital to fund those orders is extremely beneficial for a startup like ours.

Rumpl Blanket – Throw Size

We’re very excited to be working with another San Francisco brand, our friends at Rumpl. They make the world’s best performance blanket out of 20D Ripstop Nylon – it’s a premium and versatile blanket that can be used anywhere you go (or when you don’t go anywhere).

Steele Canvas for OLIVERS Weekender

We’re also thrilled to have joined forces with legendary New England brand Steele Canvas. Founded in 1921, they cut their teeth manufacturing specialty canvas products for the coal and textile trades. This special edition weekender (only available here) is constructed of heavy duty duck canvas and finished with leather reinforcements.

At OLIVERS, we believe that men should never have to compromise between performance and style. We got our start with you, the Kickstarter community, through the launch of the All Over Short in Fall 2013.

Today, we’re moving forward focused on the same set of values with which we started – putting design at the forefront of every decision, using only the highest quality components, continually focused on perfecting fit, and promoting thoughtfulness in both fitness and nutrition.

With your support, we’re looking forward to bringing another innovative, best-in-class product to the market.

Risks and challenges

The team has done its best to mitigate the risks and challenges for this project.

We’ve been developing and testing different versions of the brief for the past year. We have multiple working prototypes and can proudly state that the product is fantastic.

The manufacturer for this product has over 20 years experience producing technical apparel. Our suppliers and vendors are best in class and we trust them to deliver on the schedule as promised.

That said, there are inherent risks of delay in the process. We will communicate with both our backers and our manufacturer throughout the campaign to ensure the fulfillment timeline stays true.

Best Leggings Ever! — Made in USA Kickstarter

Best Leggings Ever! — Unique Fabric / Stylish / Made in USA by Jim Phelan — Kickstarter.

We know that leggings are the new “it” garment. Women wear it everywhere. Of course, we know that leggings are comfortable and versatile and, sometimes, even stylish, but so many leggings out there are so poorly made. Just in time, Kickstarter, the crowdfunding project, has introduced a great niche product called “The Best Leggings Ever”.

Founder, Jim Phelan has a fantastic plan to do exactly that – create the best leggings ever (and made in USA). Of course, with any of the best clothing made – this means starting with the best material available for the fabric. So, Mr. Phelan did his due diligence looking for the softest yarn available. What he found was an organic modal yarn. He then takes the yarn combines it with Lycra which is then weaved into a buttermilk design pattern, which is more like sheets weaved together at 8000 stitches per inch, unheard of in leggings. And guaranteed not to be too sheer unlike the Lulelemon problem two years ago – see Unwanted Exposure for Lululemon. This is all weaved in Southern California.

butterknit

The next component for an extremely high quality garment is the sewing. No cheap short-cuts in having it sewn in Bangladesh, Vietnam or China. These Best Leggings Ever are shipped to San Francisco to a company that has been sewing quality clothing for decades. In San Francisco, they are cut, sewn and dyed with exacting standards with attention for detail.

Best Legging Ever Platinum Wash

Best Legging Ever Platinum Wash

There is one thing you will not see on any other leggings company and that is a 3 year no shrink, no-fade guarantee. There are a choice of 5 varieties: rose specialty wash, super black, platinum, charcoal, and platinum specialty wash.

Bad News: The Best Leggings project did not get the needed funding. March 7, 2015.
