Marine Layer is a San Francisco based maker of clothing made in USA. They started with a great selection of T-shirts, but they have expanded their wares to socks, coats, hoodies, sweatshirts, shorts, bathing suits, wool hats, blazer, button down shirts and polo shirts. Marine Layer also has tops, sweaters, shorts, bikini, yoga pants, PJs, lingerie, jeans, hoodies and coats for women. Marine Layer was started in 2009 by Mike Natenshon after his favorite T shirt was thrown out and could not find a suitable replacement. So, he created soft and comfortable clothing line from scratch. Now Marine Layer has 39 stores.

The Story Behind Marine Layer

The day after my girlfriend threw away my
favorite shirt I started working on Marine Layer…

THE FIRST SOFT SHIRT

To be fair, she wasn’t crazy or anything…
it was definitely on its last legs
(the shirt, not Kelly).

I wanted to recreate a shirt that would feel like my old favorite from day 1, so I wouldn’t have to worry about anybody taking liberties with my closet + a trash can.

THEN WE BOUGHT A BUS

It took me over a year to perfect a custom fabric, so I convinced my best friend Adam to join me. After we made our first real batch of tees, we realized we needed something to transport them.

So we did what any sane business would do: We bought a ’69 VW bus. (That’s Adam driving it. It’s only broken down like 27 times so we’re feeling pretty good about the investment).

MORE FRIENDS & OTHER SOFT STUFF

Since then, we’ve gotten a bunch of friends to quit their jobs and help us make some clothes.

Together, we’ve built a brand around absurdly soft shirts that are perfect for a 7-day weekend kinda lifestyle.

How we
redefined soft.

TEES FROM TREES

MicroModal, found in our signature fabric, is made from recycled beechwood. The pulp production is self-sufficient, which makes our tees sustainable, eco-friendly, and so. so. soft.

SO SOFT IT’S ABSURD

When we say our stuff is soft, we really mean it. It’s not like “oh, this feels nice” soft. It’s “holy sh#% how did they make this I’m never taking it off” soft.

Custom fabrics

Beechwood pulp is spun into our custom fiber, which is the foundation of all of our yarns. We’ve created over 25 custom fabrics (and counting) using this method, so we’re not kidding when we say our clothes are one-of-a-kind.

Made Responsibly (by Adults)

Most of our stuff comes from SF or LA, where some of the best knits in the world are made. For some of the more technical styles, we turn to sewers overseas that work in the same ethical and sustainable factories we’d use here.
