American Made Clothes – We Shop American

American Made Clothes – We Shop American.

I have just found a great website. It is called “We Shop American”. The top link will get you to clothing, made in America. The products displayed on their website are usually created by very small companies (none of those giant companies). They try to highlight only “cool”products. The website displays not only clothing, but gifts, gear, electronics, office products, toys and accessories as well. Their list of products is rather extensive.

A typical highlight product would look like this (well not exactly like this as it wouldn’t have a black background like my blog):

Blue Delta Jeans Co. Custom Jeans

Blue Delta Jeans Co Custom

Blue Delta Jeans Co Custom

We all know it: a good, form-fitting pair of jeans has never been simple to find. Fortunate for you, Tupelo, Mississippi’s Blue Delta Jeans Co. has forged a commitment to delivering you the perfect, custom pair of jeans, right from day one. No one jean is alike. Everything from denim weight (ranging from 10.5 oz Ecru to 13 oz Heavy) to pocket material is customizable by you. No more buying jeans from a folded stack in a bleak and soulless department store. Discover your true, all-natural pair, find your perfect fit and build your jeans with the help of the talented seamsters at Blue Delta Jean Co. Fits like a suit, wears like jeans, measured and cut to fit YOU, that kind of originality.

Below is an excerpt from their About Us page:

For This Fashionista, America-made Fashion is the Ultimate Adventure

By Ryan Lombardozzi, January 20, 2015

Rita Mehta is the creator of the fashion website The American Edit, described as the "style-minded map to Made in America."

Rita Mehta is the creator of the fashion website The American Edit, described as the “style-minded map to Made in America.”

Website celebrates brands that manufacture in the United States.

The world’s ultimate adventures consist of ice climbing the Canadian Rockies and scuba diving off the British Columbia coast, according to National Geographic.

To Rita Mehta, the ultimate adventure is shopping.

Mehta is the author of The American Edit, a website that celebrates American-made fashion — and Mehta certainly knows fashion. From scouring the city to find the perfect pair of jeans to traveling overseas for her work with major global retailers, Mehta has furthered her obsession with quality, deriving pleasure from the smallest details at every outing.

And that focus on quality was her initial driving force to buy American-made.

“I was at a point where I was spending more money on my apparel and had found that there wasn’t a clear relationship between price and quality,” Mehta says. “As I looked further into this, I realized that there was often — but not always! — a better relationship between where a product was made, the brand’s thought process on production, and quality.”

For example, Mehta noticed a quality-cost gap when studying her husband’s clothing, which seemed to be of higher quality than her own. She discovered most of his clothing was manufactured in the United States, Europe and Japan, which prompted a decision to focus her efforts on products made in those areas.

She soon found herself sharing her new fashion journey with others. A love of reading blogs and brand stories inspired Mehta to start The American Edit in September 2013, with the goal of finding new products and sharing those finds with like-minded consumers.

“I feel proud to buy products that are made by companies that I know and trust to produce responsibly and ethically and in America.” Rita Mehta, The American Edit

The American Edit is more than your typical blog, though. It’s a user-friendly website that features Mehta’s A-List an encyclopedia of her favorite brands that she personally uses, purchases and would recommend to anyone — along with articles and blogs about the products she features. She also includes information on her own agency, which provides sourcing and production consulting, retail strategy development and brand identity and marketing.

“The goal for this blog is to be redundant, for it to be so easy to find American-made goods at every price point and retailer that there is no need for me to write about them,” Mehta says. “We’ve got some time [until] we get there, but it’s already easier than it was when I started, so I’m hopeful.”

Of course, with every decision comes obstacles. While finding American-made products wasn’t very difficult, Mehta discovered that finding American-made products that appealed to her aesthetic tastes was a challenge.

Another obstacle?

“The biggest difficulty is cost — responsibly made American-made clothing tends to warrant a higher retail given the better wages, labor laws, and working conditions,” she says. “It can be difficult to tell people to spend more money on things they need, but I’ve found that we really need far less than we think, and it’s always better to have a few nice things than piles of lesser things.”

Mehta also helps American manufacturers through her agency, utilizing her experience in retail, product development and merchandising to help American-made brands, makers and supporters build their businesses.

Mehta says she has always been passionate about small business, and wanted to support independent brands and makers however she could. Because of this, she works with retailers to discover American-made brands that fit within their assortments and with brands to launch products and build long-term growth strategies.

“The best way to buy responsibly is to know where your product came from, and the best way to do that is to know who made it,” Mehta says.

“American-made is not perfect, and every supporter should know that — there is unethical and irresponsible production taking place here as well that no one should condone,” she adds. “However, I feel proud to buy products that are made by companies that I know and trust to produce responsibly and ethically and in America. It feels good to know that I’m supporting the economy and also my community.”

Made in America Movement websites

Main point: Websites that highlight the Made in USA movement are highlighted.

There is definitely an undercurrent where people want to Buy American. Each day more and more people are checking labels and asking clerks if things are made in America. There are a few reasons why people want to Buy American: 1) America produces great quality products; 2) Buying American is good for the American economy and stops outsourcing of American jobs; and 3) ethical concerns such as child labor, slave labor or human trafficked workers, unsafe products, unsafe food, countries that blithely pollute the environment, which is all due to the World Trade Organization agreement that allows other countries to follow their own standards and not the standards of the American people. In order to connect with others with an interest in Made in America I have come up with a list of websites and Facebook pages that also are interested in the Made in America movement.

Made in America Movement

Made in America Movement

Made in USA/ Made in America Websites Origin

There is no official department that encourages buying American. It is basically a grass-roots movement, because our politicians have forgotten that manufacturing and exporting is still and has been the backbone of the US economy for centuries. Maybe it is because we are hamstrung by the Agreement that we signed in 1995, The World Trade Organization Agreement (for more information about the WTO, see my blog entry: A Short Lesson in Global Economics – USA vs The World), which says the U.S. will NOT favor its own products over imported products. (But that is crazy!!)  In this grass roots “Made in America” movement, a few individuals, unconnected with each other, started publishing websites on where to find American made goods.  Each year, there are more websites, and a few disappear. But they are still disconnected. It would be nice if there could be a single “master” website which could easily direct one to finding an American made product, with all the other sites being satellites.

Types of Made in USA/America Websites

There are several types of websites: 1) directory type – sends the user to links or towards brands, sometimes using a search tool; 2) products type – the website actually is selling products on their website. These websites tend to sell products that are only sold through the internet, and therefore, the number of products is smaller than products that are found in brick and mortar stores; 3) search engines – website is basically makes the user search for certain products, the problem quite often encountered is that the results many times are not Made in USA; and 4) blogs – these are usually a combination of observations and opinions mixed in with reviews of products made in the USA. (Updated August 25, 2015.)

More Best Made in USA Websites

For the 4th of July, I have decided to add to my list of the Best “Made in USA” websites. For people interested in the made in USA/America movement, sometimes the internet is a very inefficient and not very friendly in attempting to find others interested in the “Made in USA” movement. There are many people with websites, facebook accounts, blogs, tumblr and twitter accounts that are promoting “Made in the USA”. My original blog entry listed about one hundred entries, see Best “Made in USA websites.”

I have just added another 30 entries for Made in USA websites/blogs or Facebook accounts. Sorry, I have not listed any twitter accounts and I have listed one tumblr account.

My Favorite “Made in USA” Websites

We will start with one of my favorite blogs: The American-Made Guide to Life. This blog is written by Amy in New York City. She has a rapidly growing audience and comments on finding things “made in the USA”, such as clothing, accessories, food, drink, etc. Amy, also, lists some timely multi-media articles about “Made in the USA”. She also has a Facebook page.

Another one of my favorites is from Josh Miller who just completed his movie “Made in the USA: The 30 Day Journey”. His website is usa30days.com. In it he tells you about the movie, and you are able to purchase the movie. The premise of the movie is that he travels across the United States over 30 days using only Made in USA products. When he does not have “made in the USA” products, he does without. He, also, has a very interactive Facebook discussions.

Another great site is madecollection.com. It is a website, that collects many different and exciting products all made within the USA. They have many sales and a very good collection of clothing, accessories and many surprising things.

sfmade.org is a great website and sort of a directory. It highlights small businesses that make things in the San Francisco Bay Area. Another website which is very similar is madeinnyc.org demonstrating products made in New York City.

Additions to Best Made in America/USA websites

I have just added 5 new websites specializing in Made in America/USA list. See Best Made in USA Website.

First is wepledgemadeinusa.com. The website was created by the owners of BuyDirectUS.com. This website is to show support of U.S. manufacturers while pledging our support as U.S. consumers.

Second is americawhatwentwrong.org. This blog was created by professional writers, Donald Bartlett and James Steele. They had just published the book: “The Betrayal of the American Dream”. This book was featured on my blog on August 7, 2012. Their original 9-part newspaper series: “America What Went Wrong” was published in 1991. The book and the newspaper series are about the deterioration of the U.S. economy and does give some solutions. It is a great source of  information and it is a great, professional looking blog.

Third is americanbrandproject.com. This website was created by Billy Kirk. He sells handmade leather goods. There is also a project to help Americans find American made products. One additional feature is that when you hover over a product, Mr. Kirk gives the product a rating.

Fourth is americanbuiltusa.com. This website sells a few T shirts for men and women. There are a few styles to chose from. They are made in Pocatello, Idaho.

Fifth is plaza-usa.com. This website and blog recently started on August 17, 2012. It is a concierge service to help you U.S. made products including clothing, jewelry, home and garden, bikes and boats. Very nice start and great potential.

(Updated January 26,2015.)
